Lining Up for Seconds

Last night on my way home from work, I stopped by my neighbrohood CVS and got me second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

It was quick. It was painless. (Well, relatively painless--my arm is a bit achy today, but not to the point where I can't use it.)

And? It was necessary.

If we want to get back to so-called "real" life, we have to get vaccinated so we can be with one another without the prospect of spreading potentially deadly viruses amongst ourselves. Amongst our friends. Amongst our family.

If you've been resisting getting vaccinated up to this point, think of it this way: You're not doing it for yourself; you're doing it for those you care about--for those you love and wouldn't want to be without.

It's the least selfish thing you can do. So, please, do it.

42 Years Ago Today

It seems like only yesterday...

I'm just kidding. No. It doesn't.

It seems like we've always had Svengoolie on our TV screens every Saturday night--first on WFLD (now Chicago's Fox affiliate), then on WCIU, and now on the ME-TV network.

But no. He had to start somewhere, and on June 16, 1979, he showed up on our TV screens for the very first time as Son of Svengoolie.
His show stayed on for several years, ending in 1986. And that, it seemed, was that.

Until it wasn't.

In January 1995, Son of Sven returned to the airwaves, now on WCIU, the U, and now just Svengoolie, the "Son of" having been lopped off with the permission of the original Sven, Jerry G. Bishop.

He still shows old horror and sci-fi movies--some great, some awful--with the same corny sense of humor and same thorough knowledge of the genres every Saturday night (with reruns the following Saturday at 11 a.m. on--surprise!--WCIU).

Happy Anniversary, Sven. Long may your rubber chickens fly.

Phase 4

Illinois reaches Phase 4 of its reopening plan today.

This means that folks who are fully vaccinated can pretty much do whatever they want--go to a restaurant, see a movie, catch a ballgame--as long as they're fully vaccinated.

They'll still be required to wear a mask under certain circumstances--riding the bus or train, for example--but all the venues that have had to close or work under severe seating restrictions can now fully reopen.

I'll still be wearing a mask for the next couple of weeks, though--until my second vaccine dose is administered by the fine folks at CVS on June 22nd.

Better safe than sorry--or dead.

One Down, One to Go

Yesterday, I received my first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

My appointment at my neighborhood CVS was easily made online, and once I arrived it was quick and relatively painless. (Aside from some minor bruising, I'm fine.)

And? It cost me nothing.

My next appointment for the second dose is just under three weeks away.

At that point, will I toss aside my Spider-Man face mask with something approaching glee?

No. I will not.

I will keep wearing my mask until there is a public announcement that masks are no longer necessary. I am hopeful that such an announcement is coming soon.

In the meantime, I'll wear my mask, avoid crowds and generally behave myself.

I may not be enjoying life much right now--hard to be excited about sleeping on Mom's living room couch night after night--but I have no desire to tempt fate.
