This Week's Travel Reading
In his time, he was considered inarticulate, stupid and ugly--all adjectives applied to me at one time or another as well--and yet he accomplished what many could not have done even on their best days. (This I have yet to do. Give me time.) I have not seen Steven Spielberg's movie based on part of this book, but the book itself covers not only Lincoln's presidency, but how his rival for the presidency, some of whom could not stand the man initially, were instrumental to his administration. The book also goes a long way toward humanizing Lincoln while acknowledging that he's attained legendary/mythical status quickly after his assassination. It's a huge book--something over 900 pages--but it's a remarkably brisk read.

On the Way to Work This Morning
Remnants found this morning of the first snowfall of the year, which swirled down and around the cab on Kedzie Avenue as I rode home from work last night.

On the Way to Work This Morning
The construction of the Germanic village for in Daley Center Plaza for Christkindlmarket continues apace, and the tree, donated by a family in Prospect Heights, is already in its place.
I must say that this year's tree is a substantial improvement over the trees from the past couple of years, which looked like they could benefit from being swaddled in Linus's blue blanket. This year's tree appears lush and full, and it looks like the city workers in their cherry pickers are actually stringing lights on the tree this year, as opposed to last year, when they draped cheap-looking vertical strands that did nothing to hide the sparsity of branches beneath.

While Watching TV Last Night...
He looks rather pleased with the election results. The Neptunian behind him, however, had no comment.
